THIS IS IT! My company is finally switching from Google Maps to OpenStreetMap!

This is challenging: we need maps, but also Geocoding and reverse, Directions, addresses autocomplete… switch2osm.org lists some libs, but I’d love to hear from real devs. Do you have resources and tips to share? Feedback on how to configure the different libs? E.g. nominatim often doesn’t find addresses, but I’m sure it can be tweaked.

Article 11 “poses a significant threat to an informed and literate society”, open science advocates including the European University Association (EUA) and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) have warned – by calling your MEP now and asking them to comment on this concern: saveyourinternet.eu

Full open letter by open science advocates:

"Don't let the EU break our Internet - tell your MEP to save it before 20 June"

What scares me is how easy it is to mess up things

and how the only way to change things is via "your MEP", who probably does not care at all or is not even aware

On Birdsite, somebody asked why GitHub would change to the worse after the acquisition by Microsoft. This is what I answered:

Microsoft has a history of ruining innovative products by acquiring them. Remember Skype? It used to be innovative software. This may be due to incompetence. In other cases, Microsoft has intentionally damaged products by limiting their interoperability:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,

This is a note to people moving their repositories blindly to Gitlab.org: do you know Google is actually a huge investor in Gitlab?

The issue is not about Microsoft buying Github. The issue is about centralization and silos.

You do not solve that by moving your data from one silo to another.

You solve that by relying on small providers you can trust, or by becoming a provider yourself.

New question by @chpietsch:

“Now that Microsoft has bought GitHub, what alternatives are there?”

There are FOSS alternatives that implement most (such as GitLab) or the most important features of GitHub (such as Gogs or Gitea). But what about those who cannot run their own instance? Are there lists of public instances of these free and open-source Git hosting solutions?”

We all need a free alternative to YouTube!

PeerTube is a decentralized video hosting network, based on free/libre software.

PeerTube is currently in beta version, that's why @Framasoft needs your help to pave the road to version 1.0!

New question by Cord Wiljes:

“Do publishers allow green OA to supplementary material?

[…]

Does his also cover supplementary material, i.e. research data that has been submitted by the author(s) to the publisher and that is available on the publisher's website, but only after paying for access to the paper?”
